Free Press sports writer Nick Baumgardner breaks down and predicts every game on the 2017 Michigan football schedule.
Sept. 2 vs. Florida Arlington, Texas
Both teams are in similar positions. Michigan and Florida are both replacing a lot. The Gators have suspensions and QB uncertainty to deal with. The http://www.wolverinesjerseyedge.com/eddie-mcdoom-jersey-c-22.html Wolverines will count on a lot of youth – basically everywhere. This won’t be a pretty game. In fact, it could be an offensive clunker for a while. If you’re Michigan, it’s a great way to start the season as you’ll figure out who you can count on right away. In games like this, you go with the better coach And that’s Jim Harbaugh.
Win U M 21, Florida 17
Sept. 9 vs. Cincinnati
A familiar face is now in charge in Cincinnati Ex Ohio State assistant Luke Fickell. So it’s a fresh start. But the Bearcats averaged fewer than 20 points per game last season, winning only four games. Fickell probably needs more time to get this thing off the ground. Michigan will be playing in front of its home crowd for the first time in 2017, but it will also still be in the process of working out some kinks. Big time blowouts happened in 2016. Not sure it’ll be as easy this year. Still, Michigan’s fine here.
Win U M 30, Cincinnati 14
Column Progress is tough to pinpoint, but Michigan must find it in 2017
Sept. 16 vs. Air Force
Power schools playing service academies is always a cool thing. But it’s also usually terrifying. Troy Calhoun is really, really good. And his offense has morphed beyond a straight triple option attack, though it’s the option concepts that forced Don Brown to start prepping for this game back in spring. The Falcons lost a lot of firepower from last year’s 10 win team. They’re rebuilding. Still, the http://www.wolverinesjerseyedge.com/chris-evans-jersey-c-21.html offense is unique and always dangerous enough to make young defenses look foolish. Michigan wins, but this could get interesting.
Win U M 34 , Air Force 17
Sept. 23 at Purdue
If Jeff Brohm has a quarterback, his offense can light it up. Brohm’s Western Kentucky teams shredded defenses during his run in Bowling Green. And Purdue junior David Blough threw for 3,352 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. He also tossed 21 interceptions. Defensively, the Boilers gave up more than 440 yards per game and were especially brutal against the run. Brohm has a great offensive mind and this was a good hire. But it won’t be enough yet.
Win U M 38, Purdue 17
Oct. 7 vs. Michigan State
The Spartans slogged through mountains of off season turmoil immediately after finishing a 3 9 season. MSU went through a large amount of roster attrition. The defense is thin, especially up front. Brian Lewerke has some potential and could provide a listless offense a shot of life. LJ Scott is still LJ Scott. And Mark Dantonio still loathes Michigan more than any coach despises a rival anywhere. MSU will scrap and fight and claw. I don’t see a blowout. But I do see a Michigan win.
Win U M 28, Michigan State 14

Oct. 14 at Indiana
Another new coach. Tom Allen replaces Kevin Wilson and his ridiculously fast offense more on him later . Allen did great work last season as a defensive coordinator, turning a once brutal unit into a respectable outfit. Linebacker Tegray Scales is outstanding, maybe the best Big Ten player no one talks about. The Hoosiers can play defensively and will give people problems. But the offense, suddenly, looks like a problem. Greg Frey is in Ann Arbor and Devine Redding’s in the NFL. Michigan has more talent, but it’ll have to avoid mistakes on the road.
Win U M 27 , Indiana 20
Oct. 21 at Penn State
Bottom line Michigan hasn’t beaten a Top 20 team in a true road game since 2006. And this will be a viper pit. Saquon Barkley’s the best player in the league, Trace McSorely is nowhere near the QB who struggled at Michigan Stadium last year. Penn State, overall, is the http://www.wolverinesjerseyedge.com/josh-metellus-jersey-c-23.html most experienced team in the Big Ten. This will be a white out in Happy Valley, perhaps at night. This game’s not impossible for Michigan. But until this group beats someone of substance on the road, it’s tough to pick it as a win.
Loss Penn State 31, Michigan 24
Oct. 28 vs. Rutgers
It probably won’t be 78 0 again. Well, maybe not? Rutgers was horrible last season. The Knights probably won’t be anything close to “good” this year either. But they should, at the very least, be more competitive in Chris Ash’s second year. Janarion Grant is back and that’s notable. But not that notable.

Nov. 4 vs. Minnesota
The P.J. Fleck Show will make its debut at Michigan Stadium in November. And he should be coming in with a solid rushing attack. Rodney Smith and Shannon Brooks make for a nice 1 2 punch and Fleck’s staff should add some much needed spice to the offense overall. Minnesota’s passing attack hasn’t been great in years, though, and it’ll have a new quarterback this year. The defense returns just four starters. If this was a road game for Michigan, I might take the Gophers. But it’s not. And I won’t.
Win U M 28, Minnesota 17
Nov. 11 at Maryland
D.J. Durkin was able to breathe some life into Maryland’s program last year and he found a running game in the process. Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison combined to rush for more than 1,600 yards last year, pushing Maryland to a bowl. However, Michigan’s former defensive coordinator still needs to find a defense. Defensive depth is a problem for the Terps right now and there are questions to be answered at quarterback. It’s Year 2 for Durkin. Year 4 might be really interesting. But he’s not there yet.
Win U M 35, Maryland 14
Nov. 18 at Wisconsin
Michigan, believe it or not, hasn’t visited Camp Randall Stadium since 2009 and hasn’t won there since 2001. Don’t worry, though Ondre Pipkins Jersey, it’s still a ridiculously difficult place to play. And the Badgers are still a really good, consistent football team. QB Alex Hornibrook is a year older. Tight end Troy Fumagalli is still great. The offensive line, despite losing Ryan Ramczyk, is still top notch. Losing Jack Cichy on defense hurts, but the Badgers are 67 9 at home since 2006. Remember what we said about those road games?
Loss Wisconsin 28, Michigan 17
Nov. 25 vs. Ohio State
Another year, another loaded Urban Meyer football team. The Buckeyes were one of the youngest groups in America last year and still made the College Football Playoff. They’re not that young anymore and they’re still the easy favorite to win this league. Michigan was close last season. For three quarters, the Wolverines outplayed Ohio State in Columbus. But they couldn’t salt it away. At some point, the constant losing to Ohio State has to stop. It’s Jim Harbaugh’s most difficult task. By a mile. I’m going to need to see it to believe it. I’ll take the Buckeyes again.
Loss Ohio State 34, Michigan 31
